Metagem, gems and trinkets for your PvP gear
Enchants, Gear, PvP January 19th, 2008So you are getting your PvP gear and started to wonder how to gem it and what trinkets should you use. The first thing I’m going to cover is the metagem + feet enchant choice. Why those two? I simply cannot imagine pvping without minor speed effect on my character, so you either get that from enchant or metagem.
FEET ENCHANT AND METAGEM:
1) [Powerful Earthstorm Diamond] + [Boar's Speed]
This configuration will give you a lot of stamina along with 5% stun resistance, which is good since it stack with Iron Will (and Orc Hardiness if you are an orc). Bad side of this is that you will have to change 3 red/yellow gems in your armor for purple/green ones for the meta gem to work (which will give you even more hp).
2) [Swift Skyfire Diamond] + [Surefooted]
This configuration won’t give you any stamina, but is very good for maxing attack power. Even if you don’t put any stamina gem in your gear and won’t have stamina enchant on legs or whatever, you will have over 12k hp in full S3 gear, which is very fine. Surefooted enchant will give you 5% snare resistance, which is nice (not very reliable tho, as we have no snare resistance talents), and 10 hit rating, and while hit rating might not be the sexiest stat ever, this enchant with full S3 gear and S3 weapon will give you pretty much enough hit rating not to worry about missing in arena.
3) [Relentless Earthstorm Diamond] + [Boar's Speed]
I’d never use this configuration for my arena gear, but some people do use it, so I feel I must list it :p.
ATTACK POWER VS CRIT:
When wondering if you should gear for attack power or crit as a warrior, there is only one answer: you need both. PvP gear have a lot of it’s item value spent on crit and have 3 red slots and 5 yellow slots, which makes it much easier to max crit rating as a pvp warrior. When maxing crit you can get 40 crit from [Battlemaster's Cruelty], 50 crit from 5 epic yellow gems and 15 crit + 30 attack power from 3 orange meta gems, giving you total 105 crit rating and 30 attack power. When maxing attack power you can get 80 ap from [Battlemaster's Determination], 60 ap from 3 red epic gems and 50 ap + 25 crit from 5 epic orange gems, giving you total 190 attack power and 25 crit rating. So all in all, the difference is that you will have either 160 attack power or 80 crit rating (3.63% crit). Which is better.
Using my axe vs sword calculator as a dps calculator tool for comparing the two, with base data being 1900 attack power, 31% crit, 134.2 dps 3.6 speed weapon hitting 400 resilience target, the results are:
Base damage: 178079 - no spec
Maxed crit: 183076 - no spec (2.8% dps increase)
Maxed attack power: 184853 - no spec (3.8% dps increase)
Maxing attack power will give you more dps over time than maxing crit. There are two reasons for that, one is that resilience cuts a lot of dps from crits, second is that pvp gear have tons of crit on it’s own. The difference is not very big tho and you can easly max out crit for having a bit lower burst damage, but have it more often.

Nice post =)
You forgot Enigmatic Skyfire Diamond (12 crit rating, 5% root resist) + boar’s speed from the most used metagem+bootenchant list.
Also including 3/5 and 5/5 flurry for the AP vs CRIT calculation results might have made the post little more interesting. (But hey, you’ve made the calculator - we can all try it ourselves and see what happens!)

Yeah, didn’t bother to do Flurry, might update a bit later, but I doubt it will overweight the results for crit, even with 25% flurry.

Hey Terhix, was AP normalization included in the calculator for MS/WW?

Yup.

I know for perfect damage you need to scale AP/Crit with a 50/50 balance. But I Max out Crit because Blessing of Kings will upscale your strength(AP) and would push your AP near your “max crit” in 2v2. You could party with Druid or Paladin. So this only benefits from paladin. Most of us play 5v5 I assume and they ALWAYS have a paladin in 5v5. So you’ll get Kings there.

how do you compare agi–>crit value–>crit % ?
I used to remember it

Its funny how ppl got like “oh, crit sux cause resillience make your crits lower”, but no one realise that if you go for AP your crit gets higher, wich makes the amount of dmg resillience take away higher (10% of a 3000 crit = 300 less dmg, while 10% of a 2000 crit = 200 less dmg). Also, I dont think anyone can calculate the dmg you gain from the extra rage you get from a crit compered to a hit. I am personally going feral druid/enhancment shaman/war/priest/pala in 5v5 (Were rank 1 in Blackout many weeks and rank 16 after 1 week in Cyclone, just so you know I dont have crap rating just cause go with another combo), and as soon as I get enough rating for my another Vengeful 2h I am gonna try out the axe. Gonna have about 48% crit in zerker stance then, and with WF I dont understand how someone can say that mace with maxed AP is better (wich is what I got atm) well, ofc I can get higher crits with maxed AP, but having many crits will give you alot more viability due to more rage.
What I am trying to say is that I also belived that AP would give me more dmg, but I have been maxing AP and had 1790 at max unbuffed. But only some days ago I regemmed my whole gear for crit and imo that is alot better. Eventhough you sometimes dont do that more dmg the rage from the crits is always really nice, and tbh a warrior can do much better in arena if they are able to have some good burst dmg. Oh and btw, crit vs AP does also matter on what kind of combos you play.

PS: imo its not worth going for crit unless you get ATLEAST 40% crit in battle stance unbuffed.
PSS: Gief edit.

Very good summary!
And my cents about AP vs crit: Lets not forget about the amounts of damage we are talking about here. The calculated difference is 1800 dmg in 5 minutes! Thats by far lower than the amount of dmg i add to my enemies through bloodrage. What i want to say: Even if all dependencies and synergies within our own skills and talents are calculated correctly (Rage itself, flurry, blood frenzy through deep wounds, whatever) there are so many factors out there which may alter the total dmg easily by 2k in favor of the one or other stat (What buffs do i have? are they getting dispelled? Do i pop any bloodcraze/enrage-like buffs on my target through a crit? Has my target maxed out resilience or just ~350? Hell, the list is endless). I believe nobody out there is able to serve with an overall answer to the AP vs crit question without refering to very special situations or being influenced by selective recognition.
So long,
Lifth
sorry for my bad english :-/

Btw, with the 3 cheap pvp gems and the 2 bop jewelcrafting gems there isn’t much space for maxing out anyways (3 yellow or 2 yellow/1 red slot and the trinket)
