Sword (is NOT) > Axe, final proof
Axe vs Sword, patch 2.3 October 24th, 2007UPDATE: Forgot to upload fixed script.
EDIT: Quick update after finding a logical mistake:
ZOMG I found a mistake!!1!11one
I knew something is wrong when I increased avoidance. Must drink a coffee or something. I’ve to apply miss chance to sword proc estimation twice, because you can’t get the proc if original swing didn’t hit. With that, results using same numbers:
NO RESIL:
205689 - no spec
213916 - axe spec
213398 - sword specaxe > sword
20% REDUCED CRIT DAMAGE
197461 - no spec
204043 - axe spec
204862 - sword specsword > axe
20% REDUCED CRIT DAMAGE + ORC RACIAL FOR AXE
197461 - no spec
205360 - axe spec
204862 - sword specaxe > sword
and bonus:
20% AVOIDANCE, 20% REDUCED CRIT DAMAGE (NO ORC RACIAL)
175521 - no spec
181372 - axe spec
181369 - sword specaxe ~ sword
35% AVOIDANCE (AVERAGE ROGUE DODGE+PARRY), 20% REDUCED CRIT DAMAGE (NO ORC RACIAL)
142611 - no spec
147365 - axe spec
146471 - sword specaxe > sword
I’M SAVED!
Those are my previous calculations which are wrong:
Ok, I did this to prove that sword spec has no real advantage over axe spec, and it turned out, I failed :|.
SWORD SPEC IS SUPERIOR TO AXE SPEC IN EVERY POSSIBLE WAY
First, I wrote a script to simulate average warrior dps with auto attack, MS and Whirlwind. For sake of estimations I did some hard numbers to emulate flurry and deep wounds effect, and for sword spec simulation assumed that you would strike your target at 1 hit / 2 seconds on average (that’s including hamstring / pummel as they both can proc sword spec), which is quite low as you can get much better result while spamming hamtring. The PHP script itself can be found here:
http://warriorpwns.com/spec.txt
If you do some measuring and get better numbers to put, please share them. For sake of the test I didn’t care about reducing crit chance by resilience (it would have same effect on both specs) only damage.
So here we go, numbers!
AVERAGE DAMAGE OVER 5 MINUTES, NO RESILIENCE
205689 - no spec
213916 - axe spec
214254 - sword specsword > axe
AVERAGE DAMAGE OVER 5 MINUTES, 20% CRIT DAMAGE REDUCTION
197461 - no spec
204043 - axe spec
205684 - sword specsword >> axe
and the killer for me:
AVERAGE DAMAGE OVER 5 MINUTES, 20% CRIT DAMAGE REDUCTION AND ORC RACIAL FOR AXE SPEC
197461 - no spec
205360 - axe spec
205684 - sword specsword > axe
In all those tests sword spec outperforms axe spec with damage over time, and the final nail to the axe spec coffin is that SWORD SPEC PROC OF ABILITY, UNLIKE CRIT, GIVES RAGE.
gg no re, I’m going Sword for S3 unless someone points me out I’m doing something terribly wrong.

I’m glad you do all this friggen’ math so we don’t have to. I’m still staying mace spec though…only cause I don’t have a sword. I use the Fel Hardedned Maul with mongoose on it… so yeah. It’s pretty much the only weapon that’s available to me at the moment. I also generate rage when it procs mace spec so eh…It doesn’t proc too often though…so obviously it deserves to be nerfed.

I don’t normally overuse the ellipsis like that.

umm ok???
October 24th, 2007 at 9:27 pm
lol what was that
October 24th, 2007 at 9:30 pm
so swords are better then axes?
October 24th, 2007 at 9:42 pm
In short:
On high resilience target with no avoidance (warlock) sword is better.
On high avoidance target (rogue) axe is better.

oh so say im a human warrior (which i am) i would go for what? and should i do 1 or 2 handed
October 24th, 2007 at 9:51 pm
The difference between axes and swords are, as you can see, nonexistent, it depends on situation. As a human, you will benefit more from sword/mace just like I benefit more from axe as an orc.
1h or 2h is another question, and this depends on what you want to do.
